At Juli Lash Studio in Reading, we love helping our clients achieve long, voluminous lashes that boost confidence and save time in the morning. But for a small percentage of people, lash extensions can trigger discomfort — usually due to a mild allergic reaction to lash glue.
If you’ve experienced redness, itching, or swelling after lash extensions, don’t worry. These symptoms are manageable, and with the right precautions, you can still enjoy beautiful lashes safely.
1. What Causes Lash Extension Allergies?
The most common cause of lash extension allergies is a reaction to the adhesive used to bond the extensions. Most lash glues contain cyanoacrylate, a fast-drying bonding agent that is safe for most people, but may trigger a reaction in clients with sensitive eyes or skin.
✅ Important:
Allergies to lash extensions are relatively rare, and when they do happen, they typically affect the skin around the eyes, not the eyes themselves.
2. Recognising a True Allergic Reaction vs. Sensitivity
Not all post-lash irritation is an allergy. Here’s how to tell the difference:
Common Allergy Symptoms:
-
Red, itchy, or swollen eyelids
-
Puffiness or burning sensation
-
Discomfort within 24–48 hours of application
-
Ongoing irritation that doesn’t fade
Temporary Sensitivity (Not an Allergy):
-
Mild redness in the whites of the eyes
-
Slight irritation or watering during or just after the appointment
💡 This can happen if glue fumes enter the eyes, especially for clients with round eyes or eye movement during application. It usually resolves within 24–72 hours.
3. Patch Testing – Your First Line of Protection
At Juli Lash Studio, we strongly recommend a patch test at least 24–48 hours before your full lash appointment. This involves applying a tiny amount of adhesive behind the ear or on the forearm to check for any reaction.
Patch testing is especially important if:
-
You have a history of skin or eye sensitivities
-
You’ve had previous lash or beauty treatment reactions
-
You’re pregnant or undergoing hormonal changes
4. Always Talk to Your Lash Artist First
Before your lash appointment, be sure to communicate any allergies or sensitivities with your lash technician. At Juli Lash Studio, we offer:
-
Low-fume and sensitive adhesives
-
Alternative lash sets for sensitive clients
-
Lash lifts as a non-glue alternative
We’re here to make your experience not only beautiful — but safe and comfortable too.
5. What To Do If You Have an Allergic Reaction
If you suspect an allergic reaction to lash extensions:
-
Don’t panic. Reactions are usually mild and manageable.
-
Contact us immediately. We’ll schedule a professional removal of your lash extensions.
-
Avoid DIY removal. Pulling at your lashes can cause damage.
-
Consult your GP or allergist. They may recommend antihistamines, eye drops, or creams to reduce symptoms.
6. Alternatives for Allergy-Prone Clients
If you’ve had a reaction, you don’t need to give up on beautiful lashes! Safe alternatives include:
-
Lash Lift & Tint – Enhances your natural lashes without extensions or glue
-
Hypoallergenic strip lashes – Ideal for occasional wear
-
Oil-free, gentle mascara – For sensitive eyes needing daily definition
Our team at Juli Lash Studio can help you find the best option to maintain your lash look without triggering sensitivity.
7. Aftercare Tips for Sensitive Eyes
Following proper lash aftercare can reduce irritation and extend your lash life:
-
Use a gentle, oil-free lash cleanser daily
-
Avoid rubbing or pulling at your lashes
-
Sleep on your back to prevent lash crush
-
Avoid steam and saunas for 48 hours after your appointment
-
Schedule regular infills every 2–3 weeks
Final Thoughts: Stay Safe & Stylish with Lash Extensions

FAQs about Eyelash Extensions
What are eyelash extensions?
Semi-permanent eyelash extensions are individual synthetic hand-made strands applied by isolating each natural eyelash and adhered to the natural lash with a special bonding agent. Unlike strip or flare (party) lashes, they are not applied to the natural eyelids. Eyelash extensions are great for providing fuller, curvier and longer length to your natural eyelashes.
What are the benefits of wearing eyelash extensions?
Most of the clients say that eyelash extensions can eliminate the need for eye makeup. The thickness and fullness of eyelash extensions will make you look and feel gorgeous day and night. Also, it saves a lot of time in the morning ☺
Our private studio atmosphere will help you to relax, unwind and meditate during the treatment. We are sure that some of our clients come exactly for this experience - they get priceless beauty sleep and wake up relaxed and fresh.
Do eyelash extensions damage my natural lashes?
If applied correctly, in a professional way, eyelash extensions will never damage your natural eyelashes. There are certain rules professional Lash Artists follow while applying eyelash extensions. Being able to do this properly takes extensive practice, attention to details and a dedication to perfection. Be sure you trust the education and experience of the professional you choose.
Also, inexperienced lash artists may make technical errors such as using too much glue, extensions that are too heavy, or attaching natural lashes to one another. Any of these errors can cause thinning of the natural lashes. If you feel the extensions, if they are heavy, uncomfortable, punching into your eyes, it means that treatment has been done incorrectly and best solution is to remove the extensions ASAP, before they do any damage to your natural eyelashes.
Please note, that wearing strip lashes, waterproof or fiber mascara might damage your natural eyelashes even more than correctly applied eyelash extensions, as you are forced to rub hardly or pull your lashes while removing them. Rubbing the sensitive areas of eyelids causes micro-wrinkles and being woman we wish to avoid that as much as possible.
How can I tell if my lashes were applied correctly?
Lash extensions should not hurt after they have been applied or as they are growing out. Another key element to good extensions is that they are placed close to the base of the lash but not be touching the skin. There should be no clumps or balls of glue on the lashes, you should be able to brush through them easily from base to ends.
However, inexperienced lash artists may make technical errors such as using too much glue, extensions that are too heavy, or attaching natural lashes to one another. Any of these errors can cause thinning of the natural lashes. If you feel the extensions, if they are heavy, uncomfortable, punching into your eyes, it means that treatment has been done incorrectly and best solution is to remove the extensions ASAP, before they do any damage to your natural eyelashes.
How lash extensions attached?
Depending on the place of attachment along the eye line, an extension of appropriate length, thickness, and curl is selected, dipped in a tiny amount of surgical grade adhesive, and attached near the base of one natural eyelash. The extensions are applied to the lash, not the skin, in order to achieve the best, longest-lasting result without risking complications arising from attachment to the eyelid.
My lashes are sparse/short/fine/curly/growing downwards – will that be a problem?
Most clients are good candidates for lash extensions, no matter what their concerns. We can choose the right curls, style and shape regarding to your personal features. However, the style our artists will help you create may vary depending on your natural lashes. If you’re really concerned, consider a free consultation with one of our Lash Artists to discuss a design that best suits your lashes.
I wear contact lenses - will this be a problem?
Definitely not. We recommend removing your contacts before the procedure but contact lenses can be put straight back into your eyes after your treatment.
Is there an age requirement to get lashes put on?
We require that all of our clients be a minimum age of 18 years old. For younger girls at the age 16-17, we ask them to bring parent’s permission.
Do you do different looks? How do I choose the look I want?
Eyelash extensions are available in a number of lengths, thicknesses and curls. We always discuss with you first to see what style you are interested in. We also take into consideration your face and eye shape, as well as the quality of your own natural lashes. So each look is bespoke to each client.
Do eyelash extensions come in different colours?
Yes! They can be black, light brown, dark brown, chocolate brown, pink, blue, green and purple. Whenever you like!
What about different lash brands? What's the best on the market?
There is no discernible difference between the different lash brands. The most important factor with lash extensions is the skill of your lash artist, not the brand of the lashes themselves.
What is the difference between Classic and Russian Volume eyelashes?
Classic eyelashes are individually applied eyelash extensions, when one artificial eyelash is applied to one natural lash. We apply about 80-120 eyelashes per eye, depending on the number of natural lashes you have. The Russian Volume Technique (also known as 3D-6D lashes) originated in Russia and has recently made a breakthrough in the US and Europe. This technique allows to adhere multiple number of finest grade artificial eyelashes to one natural lash. However, this technique doesn’t have anything similar to cluster lashes, as it is not a clump of thick lashes stacked together with a big bulb of glue on the end. It is state-of-the-art technology, when several very thin separate extensions are picked manually into the lash fan and wrapped around the natural lash, using the special technique and ensuring a very strong and long-lasting bond. Russian Volume technique helps us to achieve a fuller, denser and fluffier lash-line.
Can I get a half set?
Yes, you can choose a half set when you are short on time and want to have some eyelashes done or when you have few natural eyelashes. But please pay attention that we do not infill half-set lashes after 3 weeks and while we do them, depending on the amount of the natural lashes you have it will be 50-60% coverage only.
What about these infills?
Infills are like touch-ups for your extensions. Performed regularly, they’ll keep your lashes looking full and luscious. You may need them more or less often depending on how well you look after your extensions, your natural lash cycle, and the style of your initial set. Typically, clients get infills every 2-3 weeks, however some clients prefer to replace their full set every 4-6 weeks.
How long do the extensions last for?
How long your extensions will last depends on your personal lash shed and the aftercare. As your natural lashes grow and shed, the extensions will grow and shed with them. In most situations with the good aftercare after 3 weeks you must have about 40-50% of eyelashes remaining - and this time is perfect to do the infill. If you decide not to have one - the last lash might fall off after 6-8 weeks. However, after 4 weeks they will start looking pretty sparse.
So, if you want great looking eyelashes all the time, we recommend to have infills done every 3 weeks from the initial application. Some clients need (or want) to come every 2 weeks. These clients either have a somewhat faster growth cycle, are a little rougher on their lashes, or just prefer to have their lashes at maximum fullness as much as possible.
How full your lashes will look at the end of your infill procedure will be greatly affected by how many lashes you have when you arrive for your appointment - ideally you should have 50% of your extensions still on when you arrive for infill. Waiting more than 5 weeks between appointments will require another full set appointment.
Will they all fall out at the same time?
No, your extensions will fall out one at a time over several weeks in a subtle shedding process. In general it is normal to loose 2-3 lashes daily from each eye.
Do I need to prepare my lashes before I come in?
Make sure your eyelashes are clean – no traces of eye makeup – prior to your appointment, so we avoid wasting appointment time for cleaning procedures. Use an oil-free make up remover and rinse well. Any traces of oil or makeup (especially mascara) will create a barrier between the adhesive and your natural lashes, causing your extensions to drop off prematurely. Lashes should not be permed or manually curled at the time of appointment.
Why patch test is needed?
Because we put your safety first, all new clients will require a patch test at least 48hrs prior to having their eyelash extensions done. This is free of charge and takes around 10 minutes. About 7-10 short extensions are applied to each eye, to ensure there is no reaction to the adhesive. Even if you have had eyelash extensions before, you are strongly recommended to attend a patch test as all adhesives are different. Therefore, just because you are fine with one, it doesn’t mean you’re not allergic to a different brand.
Patch tests are also required for any tinting and lash lifting and brow treatments - at least 48hrs before the treatment. You can book a patch test on our booking page. While booking, we require paying £5 deposit for each patch test, however this amount is going to be carried over to your appointment. In case if you do not book with us, we do not refund this amount.
Are allergic reactions common?
Reactions are not too common but they do happen, and it does seem possible to gradually acquire an intolerance for the adhesive.
What should I do if I have an allergic reaction to the adhesive?
Primarily take a patch test to check for sensitivity to the adhesive. However if a reaction does occur we have found that taking a Pepcid AC with Benadryl helps reduce swelling, redness and block for further reactions. This however is not a solve all solution, people can still have reactions. Another option is a sensitive glue, however your retention will drop dramatically and volume lashes are not possible due to a slow dry time.
Is the adhesive used safe?
All the adhesive we use is produced in ISO regulated manufacturing environments and all products and ingredients used are EU approved and do not contain latex or formaldehyde.
How long does the application take?
Depending on the service selected, the initial application of your eyelash extensions will take 1.5 - 3 hours. Infill appointments take from 60 to 90 minutes.
Can I have extensions applied to my bottom lashes?
Yes, however we recommend this treatment only for special events.
How to look after the extensions?
It is not difficult to take care of your new lashes. You will be given “after care” instructions after your first appointment.
However, main things are: do not wet your lashes for 24 hours, do not rub or pull your extensions, do not apply any mascara or oily makeup products on them and in general follow all recommendations given by your artist. Also avoid heat, most lashes are synthetic and will lose curl when exposed to excessive heat even for a second, like opening the oven.
Can I wear mascara and other eye makeup with my extensions?
We recommend avoiding oil-based products, particularly any mascara, or oily eye-liners and pencils on your extensions and eyelids. That might affect the adhesive bond between the natural hair and the extension.
Can I use Eyelash Curlers with Eyelash Extensions?
Please do not use any mechanical eyelash curlers on your eyelash extensions as these curlers will damage the extensions and possibly your own natural lashes.
How do I wash eyelash extensions?
Wash your lashes daily (after the initial 24 hours) - once or twice a day. That is the regular hygiene each lash customer should follow. We recommend using special lash shampoo and the brush (please see the video on our Facebook page how to do it). Apply the sufficient amount of lash shampoo to your lash line or the brush, move the brush from the lids towards the ends of your extensions brushing downwards. Rinse properly after.
How do I dry my eyelash extensions?
After cleansing your eyelashes, brush your extensions with a clean mascara wand and use a lint-free cloth to gently apply pressure to the top of your extensions while keeping your eyes closed.
I slept on my lashes, now they are laying funny. What can I do?
Wash them, while wet gently brush through them. Use your blow dryer on the cold setting to dry them while you continue to brush them upwards and in the correct direction.
Will my eyelashes fall out if I swim, go to sauna or take a hot yoga class?
If you use the sauna or attend hot yoga classes frequently, there’s high possibility of some of your extensions detaching because regular exposure to steam may affect adhesive quality. If this is the case, you’ll just have to visit sooner for your infills. However, it is very important not to be exposed to any heat (sauna/sun-bed) 48 hour after your initial appointment or infills. Swimming does not interfere with the lifetime of the extension.
What can I do to make my lashes stay longer?
The best tip is to stop touching them, the oils in your fingers can break down the adhesive, not to mention that you are probably pulling some off on your own. The less you mess with them the better off you’ll be. Next, follow the proper aftercare instructions.
Do I need any breaks from lash extensions?
Why am I losing my extensions so fast?
This is a hard question to answer because we are always looking for ways to increase retention, but everyone is different. Here are a few possibilities. You are going a lash cycle which is when a majority of your natural lashing are moving from the growth stage to a shedding stage in their natural cycle. Lash sheds are also common in the spring and autumn. You got them wet in the first 24 hours and the adhesive did not cure completely. Humidity also has an effect on the curing process, so maybe the salon wasn’t humid enough/was too humid to adhere properly. You traveled from an area where the humidity was drastically different. It could be that you have a tendency for oily skin that causes the adhesive to break down (ask your lash artist to double prime with alcohol or saline solution). There are dozens of potential problems and solutions, but please don’t assume that it is your lash artists fault.
Why do my lashes flip or lay sideways after a few weeks?
Natural eyelashes grow out in a corkscrew motion. Therefore as your natural lashes grow they begin to twist and the attached lash follows suit.
What happens if I choose to have my eyelash extensions removed?
We do offer a service to have the extensions removed involving a short thirty-minute appointment in which we apply a cream remover. It is applied on top of the extensions without touching the skin and allowed to sit for 10 minutes. Once the adhesive is dissolved the extensions are gently wiped away with lint free applicators exposing the natural lashes.
I got eyelash extensions from another salon and I‘m in pain/they look terrible!
Call us immediately so we can remove your old extensions. We’ve rectified work by other salons many times, often when a client is in immense pain or discomfort from improper application. We will happily remove your old lash extensions, and if you wish, apply a new set.
Why do different salons charge different prices for lash extensions?
Many salons claim to offer eyelash extensions, but in fact provide application of shop-bought cluster or strip lashes. These salons charge lower prices for a 5-10 minute application of a substandard product.
